Thinking Big

At the very beginning, there was one big idea – to create a place for all fields of art and design – from music and dance to film, media and beyond – under one roof. In summer 2014, this idea became a reality for the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) which then moved from a total of 35 individual locations to its new campus at the Toni-Areal in the western part of Zurich, Switzerland. The huge complex of buildings from the 1970s served for the industrial production of dairy products until 1999. The modification of the whole complex to use it as a campus for the 2,500 students of one of Europe’s leading universities for the arts amounted to around 100 million Swiss francs.

Swiss broadcast service provider tpc was in charge of the project management for this prestigious building project. System integrator SLG Broadcast AG was awarded the contract for the so-called “sound cluster” and equipped the control rooms and studios, provided the components (computer room) and the infrastructure for digital and analog signal transmission for video, audio, and control.
The contract also included the audio-technical equipment for the concert halls and the control room of the composition studio as well as the construction of the video systems and providing an interface for controlling the Siemens building technology (power circuits, lighting, ventilation). SLG Broadcast developed a solution involving RAVENNA IP technology aimed at ZHdK’s technology being future-proof for many years.
